WHAT DRIVES YOU (2009)

LYRICS

Boxes and Blankets

Well I hitch up trailers and I sweep out trucks
Those big yellow rentals you see all the time
All day folks come in here their roots all pulled up
I’ve got to ask where don’t need to know why

They come in here hopeful they come in here hurt
I’ve seen ‘em happy and hateful and all in between
Most don’t even notice the name on my shirt
Just say how many boxes and blankets they need

So pack ‘em up move ‘em out oh hit the highway
Goodbye and good luck out there on the road
When your life’s loaded up out in the driveway
Remember what boxes and blankets won’t hold

They’re looking for answers somewhere in the distance
Leaving their troubles, chasing their dreams
They take what they’ve got and run after what’s missing
But all that I care is these trucks come back clean

So pack ‘em up move ‘em out oh hit the highway
Goodbye and good luck out there on the road
When your life’s loaded up out in the driveway
Remember what boxes and blankets won’t hold

‘Cause I’ve hooked up two-wheelers to rusted out Chevy’s
For folks who would shake my hand, tip me, and smile
But there’s some with two semis who barely look at me
They still think the world owes them unlimited miles

So pack ‘em up move ‘em out oh hit the highway
Goodbye and good luck out there on the road
When your life’s loaded up out in the driveway
Remember what boxes and blankets won’t hold
Yeah remember what boxes and blankets won’t hold
‘Cause there’s somethings that boxes and blankets won’t hold

Across His Back

Diving in a cloud of dust, the kid was born for second base
The story goes that he had learned, to turn two before he turned eight
I had won his momma’s heart, but he wasn’t gonna let me in
He told me that his old man promised one day he’d come back for him

He made it clear to me that one thing wouldn’t change
His uniform would keep his father’s last name

Sometimes he’d wear it like a badge
He wasn’t gonna cut me any slack
But I was gonna be a dad
No matter what the name across his back

Freshman year I took his glove, I said get your average up to B’s
Sophomore year I caught him drunk, no ball for three whole weeks
Every now and then I’d catch him laughing at my jokes
But more than once it got to where we almost came to blows

Sometimes he’d wear it like a badge
He wasn’t gonna cut me any slack
But I was gonna be a dad
No matter what the name across his back

I loved to watch him play, I never missed a game at home
And somewhere along the way, it felt just like he was my own

End of season Senior year, I wondered where the time went
This would be his last game, next year he would be pre-med
He stepped out of the dugout smiled at me and tipped his cap
Turned and ran out on the field and my jaw went slack
‘Cause on his uniform was my last name, across his back
Across his back…

Let Go Of Lonely

I wrestled with it, tried to drown it after love went south on me
Before too long being all alone was what I thought I needed to be

I held up my guard kept a good grip on my heart
But when you wrapped me in your arms

You let me let go of lonely
You let me let go when you showed me
That falling again was something I could do
I knew it right when you touched me
You jumped right on in and loved me
All I think about is holding on to you
You let me let go, let go of lonely

Your tender hands touched me and led me down a whole new road
The way I’m feelin’ has got me believin’ forever’s where this goes
And from where I’ve been it’s like I was born again
Yeah it all happened when

You let me let go of lonely
You let me let go when you showed me
That falling again was something I could do
I knew it right when you touched me
You jumped right on in and loved me
All I think about is holding on to you
You let me let go, let go of…

Lonely days and lonely nights I’d convinced myself I was doing fine
Truth is I was hanging on for dear life

You let me let go of lonely
You let me let go when you showed me
That falling again was something I could do
I knew it right when you touched me
You jumped right on in and loved me
All I think about is holding on to you
You let me let go, You let me let go, let go of lonely

Daddy’s Demon

I had his arm draped ’round my neck
We must’ve looked like quite the pair
The bourbon was heavy on his breath
Father, son and a flight of stairs

It was a none too pretty glimpse
Of what was haunting him

Daddy’s demon didn’t bother with disguise
It took it’s toll right before my eyes
No regard for youth or innocence
Passed down like some inheritance
Daddy’s demon

He lost that battle four years later
And the time we lost just eats at me
And I’m not proud to say it
But I came to know the enemy

So I take the days now one by one
For fear of what I could become

Daddy’s demon didn’t bother with disguise
It took it’s toll right before my eyes
No regard for youth or innocence
Passed down like some inheritance
Daddy’s demon, Daddy’s demon

Now I watch my little angels sleeping
Lost in some peaceful dream
Damn me if I’ll let that demon
Get the best of me

Daddy’s demon didn’t bother with disguise
It took it’s toll right before my eyes
No regard for youth or innocence
Passed down like some inheritance
Daddy’s demon, daddy’s demon

What Drives You

Is some kind of magic surging through your veins
Your flyin’ like a jet fuel burning bullet train

I’m not in this to just hold on
I want to know what you are running on

I’m gonna get to you if it’s the last thing I do
I’m gonna get to what drives you
I’m gonna see through down to your every move
I’m gonna get to what drives you

Do you feel me flat our racing to catch your scene
Well I’m hell bent set on chasing the mystery

And I’m in no mood to slow it down
And I will not quit ’til I figure you out

I’m gonna get to you if it’s the last thing I do
I’m gonna get to what drives you
I’m gonna see through down to your every move
I’m gonna get to what drives you…

Into my soul
Into my days
Into my dreams
Whatever it takes

I’m gonna get to you if it’s the last thing I do
I’m gonna get to what drives you
I’m gonna see through down to your every move
Gonna get to what drives you

I’m gonna get to you if it’s the last thing I do
I’m gonna get to what drives you
Gonna see through down to your every move
I’m gonna get to what drives you
What drives you, Oh yeah…

Long Sweet Kiss

How many times have we been here dancin’ round this thing
As the night fell around us just hangin’ out and talking

Yeah it’s been building inside of both our hearts
And it sure took it’s own time to get us where we are

A long sweet kiss
One that you’d wait for all your life
One I wish wasn’t happening right
In the middle of goodbye

Cause we both know it’s over Lord knows we tried
I won’t say that we gave up we just ran out of fight

What’s running through my veins is the fear of being alone
And how I’m gonna land after I let go of this…

Long sweet kiss
One that you’d wait for all your life
One I wish wasn’t happening right
In the middle of goodbye

So our love has come to this
All that’s left now is to seal it with

A long sweet kiss
One that you’d wait for all your life
One I wish wasn’t happening right
In the middle of goodbye
Right in the middle of goodbye

Damn You Radio

Rollin’ down the road I hear the same damn song
They keep playin’ it and I keep hating it
The singer’s going on about his broken heart
How it all went wrong, love long gone

His story’s easy to believe
Sounds like it was written about me

Damn you radio the songs you play
Damn the teardrops running down my face
Damn that little dial well within my reach
I can’t bring myself to turn off her memory
It’s my own fault I can’t let her go…but
Damn you radio

Flip the station don’t know what I’m looking for
Then I land on one playing our old song
About two hearts that find a way to beat the odds
Growing old together, love that lasts forever

Reminding me of just how good it was
Maybe someday it won’t hit me like it does

Damn you radio the songs you play
Damn the teardrops running down my face
Damn that little dial well within my reach
I can’t bring myself to turn off her memory
It’s my own fault I can’t let her go… but
Damn you radio

The Kind Of Hold

If you were the devil you could tempt me into wantin’
The everlasting life of eternal salvation
If you were my preacher I wouldn’t miss a sermon
I’d be kneelin’ in the front pew every Sunday my salvation

If you were the sky my favorite color would be blue
If you were a lie I’d swear every word was true

Baby, that’s the kind of hold you got on me
I can’t imagine my heart ever wanting to be free
You laid your hands on me and baby every since
Been tangled in your love and easy to convince
That’s the kind of hold you got on me

If you were a prison cell and I was guilty of the crime
If I got less than life I’d beg the judge for more time

And girl what I would do I’d tell ‘em throw away that key
‘Cause every minute with you is such a sweet release

Baby, that’s the kind of hold you got on me
I can’t imagine my heart ever wanting to be free
You laid your hands on me and baby every since
Been tangled in your love and easy to convince
That’s the kind of hold you got on me

‘Cause when you’re in my head there’s nothing else I know
When you’re in my arms girl I just can’t let go

Baby, that’s the kind of hold you got on me
I can’t imagine my heart ever wanting to be free
You laid your hands on me and baby every since
Been tangled in your love and easy to convince
That’s the kind of hold
That’s the kind of hold
That’s the kind of hold you got on me

I Couldn’t Live With Me Either

They say rock bottom is the place you gotta go
Before you can make amends
Well I know I’ve been there as low as you can get
Where the lying ends and the truth begins

But it’s a brand new day and I’m looking in the mirror
And for once in my life I’m not ashamed

I’m a better man for the ways that I’ve changed
For the days that I spent losing you
I was a foolish man for who I’d become
I wouldn’t blame you girl if you’d left me forever
Oh I, I couldn’t live with me either

I wish there was a way everyone like me
Could have someone like you
Someone to keep believing keep knowing in their heart
That there’s a reason to, what did I do

To deserve your love again to get this second chance
Baby you’re the reason I survived

I’m a better man for the ways that I’ve changed
For the days that I spent losing you
I was a foolish man for who I’d become
I wouldn’t blame you girl if you’d left me forever
Oh I, I couldn’t live with me either

To deserve your love again to get this second chance
Baby you’re the reason I survived

I’m a better man for the ways that I’ve changed
For the days that I spent losing you
I was a foolish man for who I’d become
I wouldn’t blame you girl if you’d left me forever
Oh I, I couldn’t live with me either
No I, I couldn’t live with me either

I Got You

I used to need eyes in the back of my head
To see if where I’d been’s where I should be instead
But not anymore

Drove myself crazy climbed every fence
Looking for greener grass trying to take every chance
Knockin’ on every door but that was before

I got you and you got me
And whatever else we need
Is just life and livin’s so easy to doooo
‘Cause I got you

Yeah we all stumble through mostly messin’ things up
But every once in a while if we’re lucky enough
On some long lonely night

We get so damn lost that we finally give in
Let go and let someone else take our hand
And it opens our eyes well you opened mine yeah

I got you and you got me
And whatever else we need
Is just life and livin’s so easy to doooo
‘Cause I got you

And I swear I’ll hold on tight
I got you
Finally now I know I got it right hey, yeah…

I got you and you got me
And whatever else we need
Is just life and livings so easy to doooo
‘Cause I got you and you got me
And that’s everything we need
It’s so right and livin’s so easy to dooooooooooooo
‘Cause I got you I got you

Salvation

When the world keeps wanting more and I’ve given all I can
When I feel like someone else ’cause I’ve forgotten who I am
When every step I take is full of hesitation
You’re my salvation

The truth the heart
You’re everything I know
A look, a touch
A whispered invitation
You’re my salvation

When the dark is everywhere and I can’t find the light
When I’m down on my knees prayin’ for a sign
When out of nowhere lightning strikes the soul of my foundation
Yeah you’re my salvation

The truth the heart
You’re everything I know
A look, a touch
A whispered invitation
You’re my salvation
You’re my salvation

And even when I run away I find you
You’re always coming to my rescue

The truth the heart
You’re everything I know
A look, a touch
A whispered invitation
You’re my salvation
You’re my salvation
When the world keeps wanting more and I’ve given all I can

The Answers

Everyday I watched him filling in the blanks
Sitting with his crossword on the couch
After going into work before the sun came up
So he’d be home when school was out

He gave me comic strips he’d cut out with his ballpoint pen
And I’d ask about the words I didn’t know
Wondering if when I grew up
I would figure out the puzzles on my own

I was sure my dad was the smartest man alive

He had the answers, he solved them all in black and white
The answers, they were right there all the time
They smelled like smoke and Old Spice
Felt like a stubble kiss goodnight
I could look in his eyes and see the answers
Smiling back at me

I remember now he never said to much
I guess his voice got lost along the way
Later on I realized he drank until it closed his eyes
And there he’d lay

But where do we find heroes without weaknesses
I wish he knew a hero’s what he was
For keeping what he fought inside
And somehow making sure that I saw only love

Though I know he never thought he got it right

He had the answers, he solved them all in black and white
The answers, they were right there all the time
They smelled like smoke and Old Spice
Felt like a stubble kiss goodnight
I could look in his eyes and see
The answers smiling back at me

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he could see
All the gifts he never knew he gave to me

They smelled like smoke and Old Spice
Felt like a stubble kiss goodnight
I could look in his eyes and see
The answers, smiling back at me
The answers, he had the answers
